Mima’s Beauty College

Phoenix Esthetician School:
Skip Cosmetology and Focus on Skin

No nails. No hair. No 1,500 hours.

In Arizona, standalone esthetician programs get you straight to your passion in 600 hours. Our business-focused education is for future entrepreneurs and independent estheticians.

What is Esthetics?

Esthetics is the dedication to the mastery of skin health. This practice focuses on using non-invasive skin treatments to achieve practical results. Cosmetic services such as waxing, microneedling, facials, makeup, and lash services change your client’s self-confidence. The face is the first thing people see. It’s the foundation of people’s identity.

You Don’t Just “Rub Lotion on Faces”

Everyone’s skin is different. If you treat every client the same, you are going to burn or scar their face. People have different allergies, which means not all products are universally safe. You must know exactly what to do in situations where making a mistake means permanent damage. Because the skin is the largest organ of the body, extensive knowledge of skin anatomy is needed to perform these treatments safely. You are a skin specialist.

What is an Esthetician?

An esthetician or “Esti” is a professional skincare technician who holds a license through their state Board of Cosmetology. Professional estheticians train at an esthetician school in Arizona to learn the complexity of skincare. Estheticians have to navigate different skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive, all of which need completely different approaches. You are your client’s skin specialist, maximizing their self-image.

The Power of a Professional License

Becoming a licensed esthetician is your pathway to legally being able to perform high-value services such as microneedling, dermaplaning, spa facials, and full body waxing. A licensed esthetician in Phoenix can also open their own independent spa anywhere in the state of Arizona. Your license demonstrates to the State Board that you have the formal training needed to protect your clients.

What Does an Esthetician Do?

You work collaboratively with your clients to achieve their healthiest skin. For some, that means treating acne by performing extractions. For others, it means providing microneedling treatments to fade away scar tissue. You will incorporate facial massage techniques to make your clients feel completely relaxed, while utilizing strict sanitation procedures to protect their health. By using a variety of advanced skin technologies, you will find the perfect solution for every skin challenge.

Creating an Experience

The most successful estheticians cultivate environments that are welcoming, relaxing, and calm. Your job is to design an experience that allows your clients to become their best selves.

This skill is your greatest asset. When you make your clients feel good, they come back. You build a strong clientele because only you can leave them feeling at peace.

What Do You Learn in Esthetician Class?

Our Phoenix-based program covers the main pillars of esthetics: facials, waxing, makeup, lash services, and facial technology. By understanding the biology and anatomy of the skin, you can change its appearance to match your client’s vibe. We teach you the science, sanitation, and safety procedures required to professionally elevate self-confidence.

Facials

Facials are the foundation of professional esthetics treatments because they thoroughly cleanse pores and remove dirt from the skin. Once the face has been cleaned, it becomes a blank canvas for targeted services. Facials range from basic cleansing and relaxation spa facials, manual extractions, and advanced technologies like galvanic machines. A proper facial is the base for every esthetician to show their client how much they care.

Waxing

Many clients struggle with body hair, and that can significantly affect their self-image. Knowing how to safely remove body hair through waxing helps create a smooth texture over someone’s entire body. Clients also enjoy face waxing that can completely change the balance of their face. Knowing the proper techniques for using wax is important to avoid skin lifting.

Makeup

Makeup is an artistic skill that can transform someone entirely. Understanding how to prep skin, contour, color correct skin tones, bake, tint, and transition shade are all techniques you can use to create a visually appealing facial profile. Whether you are correcting for skin damage, working with clients with different skin tones, or making a bride perfect – makeup maximizes their beauty.

Lash Services

Lashes accent the eyes, meaning how full they look can make them stand out. For people who love their eyes to be the star of their facial profile, services like lash extensions and lash lifting add new dimension. Knowing how to correctly apply a cluster, individual, or fan lash extension safely is important to avoid damaging someone’s eyes.

Tinting Services

Like with hair styling, some clients are going to want to tint their brows or their lashes. Often when someone changes their hair color, they’ll want to match it to keep the harmony of their image. Similar to hair coloring, knowing the correct way to lift color and put in a new one will keep you from burning someone’s brows or lashes off.

Facial Technology

Facial technology is the pinnacle of high-earning services that an esthetician can perform. Learning to safely use microneedling pens, LED light therapy machines, steamers, dermabrasion, dermaplaning blades, and other kinds of machines unlocks your income potential. These machines help you structurally change the skin to fade scars and soften wrinkles. These tools become your instruments for not just a better life for you, but your clients’ as well.

Do I Need a High School Diploma or GED to Enroll?

Mima’s Beauty College does NOT require you to have a diploma or GED to be able to pursue Esthetician school. Whatever reason you were not able to complete your high school education does not change who you are or your ability to get your Esthetician license.

Your Fresh Start Starts Here

The reason that many schools require you to have a GED or diploma is not because you legally need one to practice. It is because those schools are required by the Department of Education to have one on file in order to issue student loans, FAFSA, or Pell Grants. We choose to not work with the federal government to give the opportunity to all students looking to create a career, regardless of past education.

Not having a diploma does not change whether you can be successful as an Esthetician. The only things that matter are that you are passionate, motivated, and want to learn how to be a business owner.

Do I Need to Get a License to Be an Esthetician in Arizona?

In Arizona, the answer is basically yes. The only service you can perform without a license is makeup. This means professionally you can be a makeup artist, but not a professional esthetician. Similarly, you can get a lash certificate, but you can only perform lash extensions. If you want a career as a lash technician or makeup artist, it honestly is better to just pursue independent training. If you want to work on skin in a meaningful way, you will need your Arizona license.

If you are performing services that are invasive such as Botox or fillers, you don’t just need an esthetics license, you also need a medical license.

The Path Forward:

Step 1 Enroll 30 Days Prior
Step 2 Complete 600 Hours
Step 3 Pass State Exams
Step 4 Apply for License
The Goal Work from Home, Spa, or Rent a Suite

What Happens If I Practice Without a License in Arizona?

If you are currently performing esthetics services in Arizona that are not basic makeup application or lash services with certification, you are breaking the law. Since you are performing services for clients, if they were to report you to the state board, you can face significant consequences. You can face warnings, fines, or being barred from ever getting an esthetician license. But, most importantly, you leave yourself unprotected. Not being licensed means you do not have professional liability insurance, an LLC, or anything you can use if you hurt someone. If you burn or scar someone’s face, they could pursue legal action. This stress is not worth it when you can get your license in as little as 4 months.

While performing esthetics services without a license is a misdemeanor, performing invasive services like lip fillers and Botox without a medical license is a felony. Just having your esthetician license does not allow you to go below the top layer of the skin. A felony can lead to prison time. Do not risk it. Get your proper licensing.

Book a Tour and See if We are a Good Fit

Do You Offer FAFSA or Scholarships for the Esthetician Program?

At Mima's, we choose to work with students who don't have a high school diploma or GED. Because of that, we don't offer FAFSA or traditional student loans.

Honestly, we see that as a good thing. Student loan debt can set you back significantly right when you are just trying to build a career and get your life started. Instead, we offer flexible payment plans and financing options that make school a reality for all income levels, without forcing you to take on a mountain of debt.

Skills for Independence

A large part of any beauty and wellness career is understanding the business side of the industry. If you only learn how to do the services that an Esthetician performs, you are limiting your potential income. You are an entrepreneur from day one—you invested in a career, so learn to be a business owner. Don't rely on a spa or clinic owner to give you your clients. You'll learn how to build your client book from scratch with just a portfolio.

Why Is Investing In This Level of Training Better For Your Future?

The best thing you can do for your career is make sure that the investment you make with your tuition leads you to the best possible outcome.

Traditional esthetician schools in Phoenix focus on teaching you the trade so you can pass the state exam, which is important, but they usually stop there.

They just don't teach the legal, business, tax, or marketing side of things. Leaving those skills out is what ends up costing you more money in the long run.

AZ Average Wage $46,200 /yr
Your Top-End Potential $150,000 /yr

Right now, the average wage of an esthetician in Arizona sits around $46.2k a year, which doesn't reflect the true value of a specialized technical trade. But as an independent skincare specialist, you can make up to $150k a year.

Hitting that top-end income means having top-end skills—and the skills that actually make you $150k are the business skills. Learning the treatments is only a small part of what will make you successful.

If your school only teaches you the basic trade skills, you will make less money over the course of your career.

We include all of it because we want you to actually reach that full earning potential.

How We Invest In Your Potential

About 20% of businesses fail in their first year. By year five, that number jumps to 50%. With stats like that, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the average esthetician only lasts about five years in this industry before throwing in the towel.

Why does that happen? Simply put, most schools just teach you how to do a job, when they should be preparing you for a career.

Instead of making you start from zero and trying to figure out how to build a business all by yourself, we help you learn from our mistakes. We pass our business expertise down to you so you don’t have to stress about how to be successful—you just have to show up and put in the work.

We guide you step-by-step on how to create your own LLC so you can pay yourself properly, all while teaching you the exact techniques you need to build and scale your own clientele.

Legal & Financial Security

We don't just teach you how to perform skin treatments; we teach you how to open your own legal LLC. Anyone can finish a beauty program, but we give you the tools to build a permanent, legal business that protects your family and can never be taken away from you.

If you are looking to work for a medspa or salon first, we teach you how to read and understand employment contracts. We help you understand the difference between a W2 and a 1099 employee, and we help you understand your legal rights as a worker in the state of Arizona. We cover everything from what to ask for in your contract, to who legally owns your clients' information when working for someone else. No matter what path you choose, you should know how to advocate for yourself.

Generational Wealth & Legacy

You are not going to school just because it will be fun, you are going to school because you have goals. You and your family are choosing to make sacrifices so that you can have a better future—to leave a business, wealth, security, and comfort for your loved ones. It all starts with a single step.

The owner of Mima's Beauty College, Maggie Serrano, got her cosmetology license at 42. She built something for her three kids, but she also built a school that values your sacrifices, so that everyone who walks into our school has a family supporting them. We're here to help you create your own legacy. Maggie values her community and wants to give everyone the skills necessary to succeed.

No one succeeds alone—it takes a team. By being part of your team, we can help all of our communities. You're not just another student or enrollment number, you're a business owner, and we treat you like one from day one.

Treat yourself like the owner you are. Create your schedule, control your income, and build something real and long-lasting for yourself and your family.
